When my dependent ages out, when will their coverage end?

Coverage for your dependent turning 26 will end on the last day of their birthday month.  Example:  Dependent turning 26 on May 15, coverage will end on May 31.

When adding a newborn as a qualifying event, can other dependents also be added to the existing coverage at this time?

No. The qualifying event you mention allows the newborn and the spouse to become eligible for coverage. No other family members are allowed to be added at that time unless special enrollment rights are acquired through marriage, adoption, or placement for adoption. Special Enrollment Rights are recognized only for individuals, as provided below.

  1. For loss of other coverage or cessation of employer contributions: the employee, spouse, and any dependents losing such other coverage or employer contribution.
  2. For marriage, birth, adoption, or placement for adoption: the employee, spouse, and any newly acquired dependent(s) only.
  3. For state premium assistance eligibility: the employee and any dependents.
What happens when there is other insurance involved in a claim such as auto or workers' compensation?

Can a divorced employee continue to provide coverage on an ex-spouse?

No, a divorced employee cannot continue providing coverage on an ex-spouse. The effective date of cancellation for an ex-spouse is the first of the month following the date a court of law grants the divorce.

Can an employee refuse to add a dependent from a court order to provide health care coverage?

If a qualified medical support order (QMCSO) instructing a parent to add a dependent to medical coverage, the parent has no choice but to have that dependent enrolled and pay for any additional premium.

What should I do if I receive an inquiry regarding a paid medical claim from Rawlings Company LLC?

Rawlings and Associates is an insurance law firm contracted by BCBSKS to handle subrogation services. Subrogation is a cost-containment activity that allows groups to recover claims payments where duplicate amounts are sometimes received through a lawsuit or settlement from a third party (or its insurer). When employees receive this questionnaire, they should complete it and return it in the provided envelope.
